Agnes Water Marlins
Agnes Water Rugby League will have an A-grade team, the Marlins, in the Northern Districts competition in 2012 after the fledgling club was admitted on Saturday.
Rugby league has a strong tradition in the Gladstone region and in the southern parts the Miriam Vale Magpies have been the dominant force, winning back-to-back premierships in 2010-2011.
The Magpies home ground is named after local boy made good and State of Origin legend Gary Larson, now living and coaching in Tannum Sands.
Many players and league fans from the coastal communities have played for and followed Miriam Vale for years, but recognised the need for a club and team to represent the people of Agnes Water - Town of 1770.
Agnes Water Marlins president Darren Brennan said the support for the team had been overwhelming and already had more than 30 players and a whole crowd of supporters on the books for the new club.
"We've had a great response from businesses in the area for sponsorship of the club and plenty of blokes putting their hands up to play,'' Brennan said. "But also the families that are lining up to be part of it is just great.
"The community really wants it and we want everyone involved.''
